The aluminum blocks save around 60+ lbs and pending on 2,3,or 4v will come in around high 300's low 400 lb range mustang_gtr_99

Jul 25, 2009 That's incorrect. All 2V modular engines are iron block with aluminum head except the 4.6 2V Explorer's and Mountaineer's. When the 4.6 switched to 3V they went all aluminum. All 4V 4.6 are alluminum except the 2003-04 supercharged Cobra's. The 03-04 Cobra needed the iron block for longevity.
Feb 27, 2007 If you wanna see something interesting, go take a look at one of the newer style blocks for the 3 valve 4.6 engines. The blocks on them, are designed so much better than the older designs that it would make you want to melt your 96-04 aluminum block down and make aluminum cans for cheap beer lol. I'm serious. May 08, 2004 Based on the post below about the size of the 4.6L engine, does anyone have the true weight of the engine with an iron block? I understand that the new Lincoln Aviators have and all aluminum 4.6L that makes around 300hp, so I assume it is a 32V engine, any idea what the weight of the all aluminum engine is?

Throughout its lifespan, it was offered with either 2, 3 or 4 valves per cylinder, featured either a single (SOHC) or a dual overhead cam (DOHC) setup.
Apr 25, 2008 The Teskid Aluminim blocks (pre '01) are some of the best and strongest 4.6 blocks out there. They can handle upwards of 1200 HP with no issue. So to answer your question, yes, it is worth a 60-70 lb reduction when swapping to the Aluminum block, other than that, there is no real performance gain or difference between the blocks.
The power limit on the 4.6 engine can vary based on the production type and year of manufacture. On all 4.6 based engines though, the weak link is primarily the connecting rods. For 4.6 engines with 2 valve heads (2 valves per cylinder), the power limit is around 400 rwhp. This is for both NPI and PI models (1996-1998 and 1999-2004).
Parts are not always compatible nor interchangeable between the two. After 2004 Ford began introducing Teksid aluminum blocks. Debuting as a 2 valve per cylinder design, in 2004 Ford upgraded to a 3 valve (2 intake, 1 exhaust) 4.6L Triton. However, this engine was an option and the 2V continued to be the base V8.

Nov 02, 2012 I agree. I also would have thought an all aluminum engine (LS-3) would amount to greater weight savings relative to an iron block engine (ZZ383). I intend to replace my existing 350 with an LS 3, and a significant consideration in selecting LS3 over (e.g.) ZZ383 was for reduced weight.

Exhaust Manifolds: Cast Iron Nodular 20.9 lbs (15 for cali) Nodular Iron/Silmoly: 7.5 for left side, 7.1 for right. now to skip all that bs check this out.
