Apr 05, 2006 Steel all the way. Aluminium and steel have different thermal expansion properties. Because of the high temperatures involved, having a steel barrel and an aluminium gas block is a bad idea. If you are using a stainless steel barrel you should use a stainless steel gas block. That will give you the least headaches.

Feb 20, 2015 The aluminum gas block isn't necessarily a major safety concern, but to pretend that it's a suitable material based solely on the 'melting point' betrays a serious ignorance regarding the properties and behaviors of different metals under varying conditions such as heat, pressure, thermal stress, etc. An aluminum gas block WILL fail prematurely.

As with most aftermarket blocks it also seems they are better than older OE blocks from an architecture standpoint, e.g. oiling. Cost is a huge con obviously since most are ~5k.

A: The gas block size is based on the outside diameter of your barrel. The most common size is .75″ (this is the military standard). If you aren't sure – use calipers to measure the diameter of the barrel, in the area where the gas block sits. Or alternatively, you can try looking up the make and model of your rifle online for more details.

What happens is that aluminum will expand from the heat from the barrel and from the hot gas flowing through it which the expansion will increase the pressure on the set screw threads in the gas block causing them to compress/distort which allows the gas block set screws to loosen.
