Sep 26, 2018 Main bearing clearance in an aluminum block is not critical, use the same clearances that you would use with a cast iron block. What is important though is the housing bore dimension. Mar 19, 2013 Aug 1, 1999. Location: ohio. Not unusual to see factory bearings with these small differences in sizing. You really need to mic/measure the journals and order bearings to suit. Best clearance is about .002 in, a bit larger maybe but not over .003 or oil control and early bearing wear gets to be a problem.
