Aluminum foil has long been used as a barrier layer in flexible packaging. The production of aluminum foil begins with a series of cold roll steps where the thickness of an aluminum ingot is reduced in half with each step. In the final step below 60 μm, the foil is doubled over and sprayed with oil (for release).
Aluminum foil is indispensable in the thermal insulation of roofs and walls. Today, thermal insulation panels are manufactured from solid polyurethane foam (PUR/PIR). Such panels are perfect for insulation if they are additionally laminated with an aluminum foil top layer. Due to the aluminum, the PUR / PIR panels are thinner and lighter.
Aluminum foil is light and resistant to water, water vapor, grease and gas, it reflects light, heat and UV rays and does not charge electronically. Moreover, it is fire resistant and easy to recycle. For packaging, it is rarely used pure aluminum foil. In most cases, the aluminum foil is laminated with plastic films (eg PET, PE, or PP) or paper.
