Since RV'rs regularly pull the rods from the tanks (or should anyway), it really doesn't make a difference whether you use Mg or Al. I just use the most readily one available.

May 10, 2011 I replace my anode rod every year. But last time we were out I noticed a smell and taste in the water. I just pulled the anode rod and it is almost totally gone, not 10% of it is left and the water smelled when it came out of heater. This rod has been in about 8 months and is much worse than the others I have replaced at 1 year.

Aug 19, 2009 Suburban SW6DE water heater. I am just about to replace the anode rod with a Camco aluminum anode rod. Now I look in my manual and it says not to use a non Suburban part. Also I wonder whether I should have bought a magnesium rod. The aluminum one was on sale and about half the price.

May 10, 2019 OEM Anode Rod shipped with water heater is Magnesium because it provides the best overall protection. BUT magnesium can react with microbes in water supply and give off a sulfur smell. Hence the Optional Aluminum Anode Rod. It will not react with the microbes and stink. BUT it does not dissolve as quickly as magnesium.
