As for the age of the paint...my boat is a '64. The original paint was underneath another layer of something sprayed or rolled on.

I would go buy a spray can of aircraft remover spray it on let it sit for 10 min.and then hose it off I have used it before it is a ferry effective product you may need to repeat the process depends on how many layers of paint there are.

Avoid the steel wool and use Scotch Brite. Use water to wash off the lifted paint. Makes a mess. Don't apply more stripper until the aluminum is completely dry as water instantly neutralizes the stripper.

May 17, 2012 Hmmm never tried over cleaner to specifically remove paint, but I have accidentily gotten it on things with no ill effect. I normally use actual stripper in a can (its a compressed foam) that I get from Home Depot for small projects or I like to use aircraft stripper which comes in a larger metal can (similar to paint thinner).

You can pick it up at wal mart, auto zone, advance auto, etc. I painted quite a few alum. intakes with it, and it looks just like the raw alum. of an edelbrock intake.

You may be thinking that strong chemicals like paint stripper could damage aluminum- but that's what aircraft are made of, so it's cool.
