If you put bleach and salt onto the aluminum, especially a gel bleach so that it sticks (I used toilet bowl cleaner) then cover with plastic you will get a pretty good patina in an hour. Over time, oxidation naturally produces a film on the surface of copper, iron, and other metals. Oxidation is why iron eventually rusts, and why copper turns green. Use appropriate rubber hand protection, safety glasses and something to protect your clothes. You should do several practice plates to learn how to control the patina reaction.
