The 5xxx series alloys, in particular, have excellent weldability. High strength alloys (e.g. 7010 and 7050) and most of the 2xxx series are not recommended for fusion welding because they are prone to liquation and solidification cracking. The technique of Friction Stir Welding is particularly suited to aluminium alloys.

The main alloying element is silicon, which is added in very large quantities (up to 12 %) (table 4). This is done, to significantly reduce the alloy melting range without embrittlement.
The 5000-series alloys can be welded with or without any filler material, while the 6000-series alloys need filler material to prevent shrinkage cracking, generated during the solidification of the liquid weld pool. The filler material commonly used with aluminum alloys is a high Mg content aluminum alloy, such as the 5356 alloy (Al–5% Mg).
