Oct 04, 2018 However,if you haven't laid the proper foundation by properly machining the decks of both the block and cylinder heads, every head gasket will fail. Both the deck of the block and the cylinder heads should be machined so that they are flat and parallel to the centerline of the crankshaft to within a couple thousandths of an inch.
预计阅读时间:10 分钟Nov 17, 2009 I now have a leaky head gasket after less than 8,000 miles (coolant in the number 8 cylinder). I will be tearing it down either sometime later this week or early next week to fix it. My question is which head gasket is going to be the best one to use on an aluminum head/iron block configuration?? The compression is just under 10:1 (9.8 I believe).
User Interaction Count: 27Feb 11, 2019 Head gaskets are ridiculously important, but people rarely give them much thought. Enthusiasts buy the swap meet gasket kit, and place the gasket in the necessary locations. But, head gaskets have to contain millions of explosions, deal with the expansion and contraction of dissimilar metals, and a wide range of chemicals and extreme temperatures.
预计阅读时间:9 分钟Sep 03, 2013 Personally I would rather have a head gasket that is going to seal up properly. If you are going to use MLS gaskets, you need to deck the block, period. The factory surface is just too rough for a MLS gasket to properly seal. Use a regular Fel-Pro performance gasket and don't worry about it, I bet it will run just fine. Just my opinion,

Mar 28, 2021 Steel Seal Head Gasket Sealer comes as 2 bottles with 16 oz per bottle. For 6 and 8 cylinder engines, 2 bottles will be enough. 4 cylinder engines will only need to use 1 bottle. Our Verdict. It does the job, but we feel it doesn't provide good value for money as it's expensive with average results, and it's not the best for big leaks.
Jul 23, 2020 I've used the Victor Reinz 5746 gaskets two or three times. They have a 4.10 bore diameter, stainless steel fire ring, and a 0.026" compressed thickness. With my block decked to have the pistons 0.015" in the hole, this gasket gives me a pretty ideal quench area. And they are an OEM gasket, so quality is good.

Oct 07, 2008 The head gasket for the ls1 was the same. At least the same as what I took out. The numbers on the new fel-pro gasket itself and the stock one were the same even. Which leads me to believe that either fel-pro supplies GM their gaskets, the fel-pros are re-boxed GM gaskets, or the head gasket has been replaced before.
Jun 12, 2015 You just need gaskets that won't chew up the aluminum head. I think at this point in time, the manufacturers have taken that into consideration. I like the Fel Pro gaskets. The last small block I did used the 1003 gasket with my airflow aluminum heads. Just have to make sure that the gasket fits the bore and doesn't overhang into the chamber.

I think the idea would be to try and get two variants made: One with a 3.44" bore (max bore on an aluminum RG block) and one with a 3.5" bore (max practical bore on an iron block). These Cometic MLS gaskets are the pick amongst the guys who run really hairy turbo 2.2/2.5 engines; they're reputed to work and last .

Before honing sleeves or decking block you MUST install a torque plate using a head gasket with a steel wire. This will seat the sleeves in the block. Some engine builders heat the block to about 200 deg before installing the torque plate, then leave it at 200 deg for 30-45 minutes for extra assurance that the sleeves are seated properly.

Apr 13, 2007 The ZZ4 used a 58cc chamber, aluminum head derived from the mid 80s corvette. In order to get it to run, GM used a huge 0.051" thick head gasket (that number might be slightly different). You cant really use a thinner gasket without needing to change a lot of things to make it run, especially in the climate there, and with street gasoline.

Apr 02, 2015 Small porosity leaks in aluminum can often be easily plugged with a single pin or tapered plug. Cracks in an aluminum head or block, on the other hand, are much more difficult to repair by pinning because aluminum is a softer metal than cast iron so the pins and plugs can't achieve as much “bite” as they do in an iron casting.
The aluminum SL6 engine uses a completely different head gasket, so a regular iron-engine head gasket will NOT work. These special head gaskets are no longer available through over-the-counter parts store channels, but any good gasket specialist (advertising in e.g. Hemmings) can supply the special gasket.

For head gaskets to seal properly, the engine block and cylinder head must have the proper surface finish. A rough surface provides more grip for the gas-ket, but causes abrasion and deteriora-tion as the engine expands and con-tracts from heating and cooling. A smooth surface allows movement be-tween the head and gasket, which is
Block uses set screws as a fail safe for retaining cam bearings. HEAD GASKET CYLINDER HEAD INSTALLATION: You must use sealer on the head stud threads.
