Nov 20, 2014 Q: I need to fabricate many pieces of aluminum pipe from plate. The pipe will be 16 in. in diameter and 8 ft. long with 0.25-in. wall thickness. I want to weld the seam in one pass from the outside, but I don't want to use any backing material and I don't want to do anything to the root of the weld on the inside of the pipe.

Feb 10, 2012 Brass has got some of the propeties to do the same job, BUT nowhere near as well. The zinc in it will burn out if the arc touches it and stuff up the whole show. Hold the wire against the edge of the hole. Strike your arc on the end of the wire instead of the sheet metal. Melt the wire and then flow it into the metal.
The main difficult is that you cannot simply weld an engine block since it is made from cast iron, not steel. It is possible to weld cast iron using an arc welder and the proper welding rods, but that often can cause deformation to your engine block, or leave the welded area far more brittle and susceptible to further cracking.

Helpful wall-o-text is helpful. The reason for no pulse is two fold; one continous bead goes over several thicknesses and has 2 position changes (butt to vertical ouside 90 to fill-it), and I weld slower with my right hand than my left. With the new settings I have I was able to boost my max amps to 120 and move faster.
