The front of the block above the timing cover has a little shelf that makes the top of the timing cover face in the block. If you can rest a pencil on the block at this location, you have a prewar block.

Sold in pairs, these A356 aluminum, T-6 tempered cylinder heads are either for 1948 and earlier (350-1125) or 1949-53 (350-1115) Ford and Mercury flathead V8s. They're ribbed for added strength and have a large water capacity and excellent breathing characteristics. Compression ratio is 8.0:1 on blocks with a 3/16"" base relief (stock bore and stroke).
The block I saw didn't have the oil deflector that clips over the tube, but that may be because it was a bare block. The intake ports are D-shaped with the flat part of the D on the top.
