Use a zinc alloy anode rod to eliminate smelly hot water. With aluminum and magnesium rods, corrosion releases free electrons that are used by sulfate-reducing bacteria in the presence of water to form hydrogen sulfide gas. Do not remove the anode rod completely, as the water heater's life will be shortened.
This anode must replace the one that came with the tank or the smell won't go away. Make sure you have a combo rod in your tank and not a hex-head anode. Also tell us the brand of your heater. If you are using a water softener, consider a powered anode. The aluminum/zinc anode might not stop the smell.

Had a friend with tools come, got it out, then saw 2 anode rods(!), I only had one replacement aluminum rod and it was Sat, place was closed, no other rods could be locatedrenters coming in next dayback it went into place and treated with chlorine again. I know the smell is coming back.

Perhaps the supplier of State magnesium anode rods is having a quality control issue. I wrote to the contractor who was having hot water odor issues.

Most of the time, replacing the standard magnesium or aluminum anode rod with an aluminum/zinc alloy anode will solve the problem. The zinc is a key ingredient, since pure aluminum anodes will also reek to high heaven. Also, some people use the terms aluminum and aluminum/zinc interchangeably.

Jun 16, 2010 Ok, so, we have quite a problem around here with Magnesium anode rods, and well water causing a smell on the hot water. This is pretty common, take the rod out (void warranty) and the smell goes away. Bradford White has a solution to this, for certain zipcodes they send water heaters with an Aluminum rod. Oct 11, 2011 Replacing the standard anode with an aluminum/zinc anode, provided that no water softener is being used, often works in this situation because the reduced current of the anode will significantly reduce the amount of H 2 gas generated in the tank. Aluminum/zinc anodes are 92 percent aluminum, 7 percent zinc and 1 percent trace metals.
