Both are made from primarily aluminum, but the differences lie in the other elements present in the alloy. The major difference in the two alloys is the silicon content; 4032 has 12.2-percent silicon and 2618 has only 0.23-percent.
Aluminium/Aluminum 4032 alloy can be aged (T6 temper) by solution heating at 510°C (950°F), cold water quenching, heating at 171°C (340°F) for 10 hours and finally air cooling. Applications. Aluminium/Aluminum 4032 alloy is widely used in the manufacture of pistons.

The AutoTec small dome pistons are custom-made from 4032-forged aluminum. Petralia feels 4032 aluminum is better for street engines than higher-end 2618 forgings. The main difference is the silicon content with 4032 having about 12 to 13 percent silicon and 2618 having less than one percent. The silicon in 4032 offers some desirable heat properties but can also make the piston more brittle.
