Apr 05, 2006 Steel all the way. Aluminium and steel have different thermal expansion properties. Because of the high temperatures involved, having a steel barrel and an aluminium gas block is a bad idea. If you are using a stainless steel barrel you should use a stainless steel gas block. That will give you the least headaches.

May 08, 2017 Almost every design of gas block will gas cut (erode) the steel, aluminum just erodes faster. Geometry, gas port location and diameter as well as pressure and temperature has an effect. Whatever metal does get eroded ends up in the gas rings.

To make things more clear, this is probably the plastic type you are referring to: The handguards are two h...
Most spinnable tempers and alloys of an aluminum dent, ding or scratch more easily as compared to steel. Steel is strong and less likely to warp, deform or bend underweight, force or heat. Nevertheless, the strength of steel's tradeoff is that steel is much heavier/much denser than aluminum. Steel is typically 2.5 times denser than aluminum.

The AR-15 Direct Gas Impingement System is a rather straight forward system to understand. When the weapon is fired, gas travels down the barrel behind the bullet. As it passes the gas port, it is diverted into the Front Sight Base (FSB) or Gas Block into a gas tube which carries it into the bolt carrier key.
Mar 26, 2019 The Superlative Arms patent pending “Bleed Off”, direct impingement, gas block for the AR15 platform adjusts the gas flow by bleeding the gas out of the block instead of restricting the flow like conventional adjustable blocks.. The pressure used in the block is reduced only to the amount required to drive the bolt carrier. The remaining gas / pressure are
Feb 12, 2009 gotm4 2. Posted February 12, 2009. Steel for CAR and midlength gas systems. Aluminum does fine typically on rifle length gas ARs, no matter what on my own stuff I prefer steel always. Steel and stainless steel have similar expansion rates. Aluminum is different than steel/stainless steel. Quote.
Oct 13, 2015 If the barrel were alloy and gas block stainless, the block would get tighter. The difference in diametrical expansion for .750" journal diameter at a 500°F temperature delta is just under 0.0007" between titanium and alloy steel, with the alloy steel growing more than the titanium. An alloy steel barrel with a titanium block will see the ...

Feb 20, 2018 Carbine length gas is where they get eroded much more quickly. JP is the only quality manufacturer that I know of who ever made aluminum gas blocks, and now they only make one. NONE will ever last as long as a steel block. Choosing aluminum when quality steel blocks are available for $13 is dumb. Incredibly so.
Apr 08, 2017 One way to accomplish that, is with an adjustable gas block. I would suggest getting one made with a steel body, instead of one made of aluminum. Adjusting gas flow will allow "finer tuning" than adjusting buffer weight, as with the buffer, they would be "courser", by exchanging steel discs for tungsten discs, and/or steel bodies for aluminum.
Get whichever color you like best. That's about the only difference. Well it's stainless so until you shoot so fast that you melt it. Longer than the barrel unless you spend hours doing mag dumps. Nah they were designed to fail before the barrel as a safety feature so I don't get melonited ones.

Dec 14, 2015 I use the Socom on my older Mini -30's, but they have a fatter .625" barrel. For the .560" barrel like your 188 series, the longer LT or X-Drill will help more. And do the "dimple option". Kevin, the designer of the Accustrut, has found that dimpling the gas block so the set screws can dig in, helps the strut do it's job better.
Nov 11, 2017 Sep 6, 2017. #4. They are both very solid. I have most of the KAC rails, and a few Geissele. I am a KAC fan, but unless you are building off a KAC weapon, I would go with Geissele. The Mk4 has more Picitinny rail sections. Mk8 is more of a tube. Also, look at the Mk13, which is a little tighter fit. padom.
10 points 4 years ago. Aluminum is not a good material for gas blocks. "Aluminum expands with heat at a rate of approx. three times that of steel. This leads to gas leakage at the gas tube, just no way around it." level 2. CmdrSquirrel. 5 points 4 years ago. It's also subject to erosion over time at much higher rates than titanium or steel.

This means that an aluminum gas block expands at nearly double the rate as the underlying steel barrel when heating up from firing, making a gas leak and weapon failure much more likely. Additionally the melting point of aluminum is 1221°F vs. 2600°F for steel, revealing even the possibility of melting an aluminum gas block.
Mar 09, 2017 Possibly the only difference with the G28 Z is the gas block and regulation. With regards to different materials (steel vs. aluminum etc.) it's hard to tell. Or, perhaps the MR308 A3 has been renamed to G28 Z? According to the same LEAF catalogue quoted above the G28 E2, G28 E3 PATROL and the G28 E2 – 650 (longer barrel) are available.
Jun 25, 2020 The steel gas block has a lower expansion ratio then aluminum. What happens is that aluminum will expand from the heat from the barrel and from the hot gas flowing through it which the expansion will increase the pressure on the set screw threads in the gas block causing them to compress/distort which allows the gas block set screws to loosen.
Oct 22, 2020 Steel-Teflon is about 0.1. Aluminum-aluminum friction co-efficient is about 1.3 -- the highest of any commonly known and used material! It's murder!!! That is why aluminum engine blocks use iron cylinder liners or a plasma coating of iron or some other material, so as to avoid making those aluminum pistons rub on aluminum cylinder walls.

Accuracy Systems Non-Adjustable Gas Blocks replace your Ruger Mini's gas block. Accuracy Systems NEW Style Factory Replacement Gas Blocks are made of 7075 Alloy which is pound for pound Stronger than steel but ½ the weight with faster heat dissipation.
Oct 02, 2014 All this means that titanium parts are pretty expensive to make. For instance, NEMO arms made an AR-10 model with several parts made of titanium: upper and lower receivers, muzzle brake, handguard, buffer tube and gas block. Total cost of the firearm: $100,000. And your humble editor wonders if the person that plans to buy this will ever fire it.
Oct 06, 2015 The gas block is made of aluminum. Aluminum gas blocks are quite problematic. Your barrel is made of steel when your barrel gets hot (they do that sometimes), the steel barrel and aluminum gas block will heat and expand at different rates. This differential will cause leakage and short stroking under moderate to heavy use.
Feb 27, 2017 U.S. Army FM 23-9, M16A1 Rifle and Rifle Marksmanship. Gas piston guns are designed from the ground up to withstand the rigors of metal-to-metal impact by using steel components. When Eugene Stoner chose direct gas impingement for his AR-15 design, he drew upon his aviation experience with aluminum castings to lighten the soldier's combat load.

Dec 01, 2012 BBC71Nova. The obvious advantage of the aluminum block is weight. Then you get added benefit -although rather insignificant- of it not rusting. As with most aftermarket blocks it also seems they are better than older OE blocks from an architecture standpoint, e.g. oiling. Cost is a huge con obviously since most are ~5k.
