Jan 21, 2018 You must have a filler metal of a different composition than 6061, that's why you will not find any 6061 filler metal. Use the 4043 or 5356 and a slightly convex bead to help insure you have enough filler metal added to prevent cracking. If cracking persists, try starting in the middle of the seam and weld towards the ends.
Oct 03, 2006 Q: Which filler wire is best for welding 6061-T6 aluminum, 5356 or 4043? A: Both are acceptable for welding 6061-T6, but each has advantages and disadvantages depending on the application. An aluminum alloy containing 5 percent magnesium, 5356 generally is stronger and more ductile than 4043.

Dec 15, 2014 A: You never see 6061 filler metal because, if it existed, it would be an awful filler metal. Virtually every weld you made with it would crack. All cracking in welding aluminum alloys is hot cracking. The crack forms as the weld cools. The weld chemistry directly causes the tendency to crack.

Dec 10, 2012 I was actually wondering if anyone knew specific alloys that the manufacturers use as I was in the search for the cheapest/easiest/strongest aluminum alloy to make suspension components out of (control arms, ect). I ended up using 6061 welding with 4643 filler rod and doing a post weld heat treatment.

8. POST-WELD HEAT TREATMENT. Typically, the common heat-treatable base alloys, such as 6061-T6, lose a substantial proportion of their mechanical strength after welding. For example, 6061-T6 typically has 45,000 PSI tensile strength prior to welding and around 27,000 PSI in the as-welded condition.

Feb 01, 2010 It can be seen that the microhardness values of 6061 aluminum alloy is much lower that the alumina ceramic by a factor of 9 M. The hardness in aluminum alloy is consistently uniform throughout the whole length of the rod. On the other hand, it can clearly be seen that the hardness of alumina varies a lot, i.e. wide scatter.

It's best to use a filler rod like the AL 4043 when welding together 3003 aluminum with alloys like 5052, 6062 and 6061. This aluminum grade can also be easily cold worked and has annealing capabilities, which should be done at 775 degrees Fahrenheit either during or after cold working. Afterward, air cooling should be allowed.
