You can use a larger screw, thus one with a larger diameter. This will require you to re-thread the hole for the new screw diameter. You might have to first pre-drill the hold to enlarge it more, depending on the tap you will use. You could fill the hole completely, using an aluminum "welding" material.
Oct 25, 2013 I think I'm going to tap it out to 7/16"-14. Major thread diameter for 3/8"-16 is .375". Tap drill size for 7/16"-14 is .406", so I'm only drilling out .030", realistically less than that because the hole is already larger from being stripped. Major diameter is .4375, so I'm really only increasing hole diameter by 1/16".

Dec 28, 2021 threads strip out of the block on some BMW M52TU and M54 engines. Typically, this occurs during the repair of an engine that has been overheated. The cause of the problem is due to an overheat condition that has weakened the structure of the aluminum block assembly in the area of the bolt threads.
Feb 01, 2007 The problem with anti-sieze on small bolts in bare aluminum is: It acts like a lubricant, and makes the bolt very easy to turn, and can lead to a stripped bolt hole during tightening. I would really consider some kind of thread
May 30, 2010 IceMatrix69. Unfortunately anyway you do it will require you to pull the head. You will need to drill the stripped thread and insert a helicoil. In my mind that would be the easiest and most affordable fix. Edit: The more I think about it if you have a 90* air drill and a short bit you may be able to fix it on the car if the bolt is up front.

Nov 25, 2017 Obviously there was not enough aluminum left in the hole to hold the stud. It is possible that turning the bolt before it snapped pulled some material off the walls of the hole and as a result the depth of the threads was insufficient. My default plan for something like this would be to use a Helicoil or some other type of thread insert.
