Apr 17, 2019 The block, heads, intake manifold, timing chain cover, water pump, and water outlet were all made of GM's 4097M aluminum alloy containing 11-to-13-percent silicon. This added material lowered the aluminum's melting temperature, helped it flow more readily into molds, and reduced shrinkage during solidification.

Both engines use the familiar GM V8 firing order, 18436572. In many ways, the new Buick V8 was a fairly typical GM pushrod V8, if a bit more petite than most with a 3.50-in bore, 2.80-in stroke, and 4.24-in bore centers .

Jul 31, 2017 Recently, Gran Sport Autobody had two customers request aluminum Buick big block engines. The first was a 530 cid block for a white GSX that had been in the shop more than 20 years before. Advertisement “We first built the car in 1996, with a Buick big block,” says Diabo. “This car has since changed hands a couple of times.

The Buick engine was noted as being very dependable.

Mar 03, 2016 The original 322 CID, 172 hp V8 that arrived in 1953 set the pattern for all the Buick Nailhead V8 engines to follow through 1966. With its 4.00-in. bore and 3.20-in. stroke, the layout thoroughly embraced GM's latest short-stroke theories, while generous 4.75-in. bore spacing left plenty of room for future displacement increases up to 425 CID.

May 13, 2011 Like the Small Block Chevy, the Rocket 88 Olds, the Ford Flathead and the Chrysler Hemi, the Buick Nailhead engine is one of those that has the immortal smell of history all over it.. Yet, unlike its more familiar brothers, cousins and even competitors, the Nailhead has an aura of mystery about it as well. The Nailhead had a big-bore, short-stroke design that
In 1962 the Wildcat was a Buick Invicta subseries, mating the Invicta's longer full-size two-door hardtop Buick body (known as the "sport coupe", body production code 4647) with a high-performance 325 hp version of the 401 cid Nailhead V8, known as the "Wildcat 445" for producing 445 lbft of torque. 1953 marked Buick's 50th anniversary as well as the
Jan 06, 2021 The valve covers on the 300 and 340 engines are taller on the exterior section to make them look a bit like those on the Nailhead engines. One easy way to tell if an engine is a Nailhead is to look at the distributor. It's the only Buick V engine to have it mounted at the rear. Here's the 401 in my 1965 Wildcat (I know it needs detailing!).

Sep 20, 2012 Bruce Kent, however, campaigns a pretty stout Buick engine in his '73 Apollo. It was making 880 horsepower when the block cracked again. Instead of slapping in another sleeve, he chose to build the next project around a new TA Performance aluminum 455 Buick block. This block corrects many of the stock block's well-documented shortcomings, as they

The Buick nailhead gets its nickname from its smaller-than-average valve head diameters. To wit, the 401's stock 1.87-/1.50-inch valves are significantly smaller than many competing small-block engines. In 1967, Buick sought to remedy the situation with a much more modern second-generation V8 which had very little in common with the nailhead.
Dec 08, 2005 Oh yeah, the later 401 timing cover is aluminum, so is the water pump and the fuel pump. The 322 tcover and water pump are iron. Now, it's not "period perfect" for your '54 cut-off date, BUT raw as-cast aluminum on the front of an engine always looks really tough on a competition car. The thermostat housing neck on '56-'58 Nailheads is aluminum ...

May 02, 2012 Take a good look at the rocker arms on a real nailhead: The pushrods go underneath to push on the outer end of the rocker. The valves are actuated by the end facing to the inside. That's bass ackwards from most wedge V8's, including later buick 215-300-340-350 and the BB replacement 400-430-455.
Since 1953, the "Nailhead" had been Buick's bread-and-butter OHV V-8 engine. In different displacements, it was utilized in its full-size models and later, in the Riviera (401- and 425-cu.) and A-Body Gran Sport (401-cu.). The Nailhead also became a very popular engine for swaps, being tapped to power everything from street rods to dragsters.
