One day I finally stumbled on a post about too much lifter-bore/lifter clearance, and I found a stock replacement lifter from Comp Cams that advertized it was .001" larger.
Jun 29, 2009 The lifter bore spec for GM lifter bores is .8438 to 8443. Thank you for your replies. I certainly don't want to take any chances and thought that nothing other than evidence of machining should be visible on a lifter face. If my bores are within spec, that would leave me with .0023 - .0028 clearance if the lifters measure .8415.

Dec 28, 2007 lifter/lifter bore failures, it seems the lifters have welded themselves or otherwise hung up in the bores in iron blocks and wondered if the Al. blocks have the same issues. At this years PRI show I was surprised that the Dart, Brodix and Donovan Aluminum engine blocks didn't have bushed lifter bores as standard issue.

May 28, 2013 A nominal .904" lifter bore has a circumference of 2.83992" versus an .842"s 2.64514". Thus, a .0015" diameter clearance, or .00472" circumference, is a greater percentage of the smaller diameter. Just as a function of diameter, the .904" is 7.36% greater diameter/circumference.
Jun 11, 2014 If you're simply hot-rodding an engine, there are advantages to a larger OD lifter of any design for a given cam, which is why some racers use Chrysler lifters (stock is 0.904") in Chevys (0.842") Fords (0.875"). Overboring lifters is routinely done in big race shops and can also correct stock lifter bore mistakes done during mfgr of a block.
