Sep 26, 2018 Main bearing clearance in an aluminum block is not critical, use the same clearances that you would use with a cast iron block. What is important though is the housing bore dimension. Aim for the minimum bore diameter, or very close to it. Bill Perfect Circle Doctor of Motors certification SAE Member (30 years)

This means at 170 F you will have a total of.004 main clearance at 170 degrees F in the vertical axis. Just gets some heat into the block before you stomp on it to get the block to thermal expand some.
User Interaction Count: 28Oct 01, 2018 They covered thermal changes in oil clearance using steel to aluminum main caps, from iron, to aluminum blocks, to solid to water blocks. The amount of change was remarkable. Aluminum Oval or Road Race had to be Pre-heated, oil water. If you did not do this, you got 1 main minimum. Try it in a hot tank yourself.
Original Equipment clearance specifications are necessarily tight due to the use of energy conserving lightweight oils, relatively high operating temperatures, and a concern for control of noise and vibration, especially in aluminum blocks. High Performance engines on the other hand, typically employ greater bearing clearances for a number of ...

Feb 16, 2014 Building my first aluminum block and looking for advise on how to set up the line hone size and main bearing clearance. This is a seasoned RDI 351W block with 2.750 Cleveland mains and billet caps. Use is road racing and will have an external wet sump pump.
Sep 14, 2016 Aluminum blocks expand more than iron blocks, so many engine builders will tighten up the main bearing clearance when building the engine at room temperature, knowing that when the engine attains operating temperature, the clearance will have expanded. That's one of the reasons why engines in IndyCar, WEC, Formula 1 and other high-end ...
Timing cover and Oil pump dowel pins are .246” O.D. in dart blocks We recommend using Fel-Pro# 1037, 1047 or 1067 head gaskets with the Big M block. DRY SUMP SYSTEM If a dry sump oiling system is used you must plug the oil inlet hole in the rear main cap or in the block, underneath the rear main cap.

Nov 25, 2021 The thermal growth was too much with an aluminum block and the bearing would move or spin. Begle's team attempted to get more oil clearance in an aluminum block by making the housing bore larger, but that reduced the clamping force, making the problem even bigger. They got oil clearance, but they lost force to keep the bearing in the block.

Sep 18, 2018 Aluminum, be it a 4032 piston or a 2618 version, or whatever these blocks are made out of, all have different rates, but grows more than iron and steel. Different alloys do different things, but I do not know of any aluminum that grows equal to iron.

Mar 19, 2013 Aug 1, 1999. Location: ohio. Not unusual to see factory bearings with these small differences in sizing. You really need to mic/measure the journals and order bearings to suit. Best clearance is about .002 in, a bit larger maybe but not over .003 or oil control and early bearing wear gets to be a problem.
These blocks come in two versions; early blocks built from 1989 to 1995 have 2 bolt-main caps and 2.300 main bearing journals. They are good to 6500 rpmπs (street use) normally aspirated. If the engine is to be run over 6500, see track time, be supercharged, turbo charged or see nitrous the 1996 and newer cross-bolted block should be used.
3) main size: the 2.625 size main bearing require less oil to maintain a hydrodynamic wedge (this is the “wedge” of oil that separates the crank from the bearings) and the smaller main size also leaves more material in the block around the main studs/saddles.
