Jan 17, 2009 The 6.385 rod allows the crank manufacture to make the throws on the crank bigger which allows you to go internal because the piston would hit the crank otherwise. Also saves you from having to spend $500 on malloy metal to internal a external crank. You don't need to worry about that if you stay external.

Dec 16, 2014 I'd say the same thing. If you were starting from scratch I'd probably suggest a 6.385 rod but the 6.135 rod is just fine. GM used 6.135 rods in all the 454's they built so we know they work. As for clearancing the block, it's not a big deal. In most cases the rod bolts just barely touch the block so there's only a tiny bit of grinding to do.
